Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi was born in Mhlabathini, KwaZulu on the 27th of August 1928. He holds a degree from the University of Fort Hare. In 1994, Prince Buthlezi was appointed as the Minister of Home Affairs and has been appointed as Acting President 11 times.

After completing his primary schooling in Johannesburg, he attended Charterhouse school in England, before going on to study at Christ Church, Oxford, graduating in 1931 in philosophy, politics and economics.
